Using already printed panels, Hughes shows how to select designs ripe for creativity, explaining the 5 considerations, from the quantity of straight lines (forget it if there are too many) to a call for new backgrounds. Much of the text, enlivened with great color photographs and samples, is dedicated to getting ready, going over sewing-machine specifics, methods like trapunto and overlay, and finishing. Techniques come with how-to examples, from zigzag and straight stitching to fringing and couching. Sidebar direction (for instance, always use a pressing cloth) guides both newbies and the experienced. Finally, 6 projects, start to finish, help cement her teachings, and 14 pages of gallery art showcase the quilting.

I really enjoyed reading this book, just a little different to many other quilt books on the market.

About the Author

Joyce Hughes is an award-winning quilter, McCall's Quilting Quilt Design Star, and fabric industry consultant. A self-taught fiber artist, she has single-handedly elevated printed panels to quilt art. Her very first art quilt won a blue ribbon when it was entered into competition, an honor that has since led to dozens of awards, recognitions and opportunities in the quilting world. Joyce continues to create and design one-of-a-kind quilts and handbags, while maintaining an active schedule of lectures and workshops teaching her designing and quilting techniques.
