Embroidery Fundamentals

2 Day Virtual Workshop with Mary Nesnay

February 6 & February 7, 2026

If you are just starting out or want to brush up on your technique, this is the perfect place to start. Learn about best practices for embroidery including: threads, needles, stabilizers, proper hooping methods, registration, troubleshooting common embroidery issues, setting up your workspace, storing embroidery files correctly on your computer, digitizing principles, embroidery stitch types, adding and editing designs on your machine, applique techniques, floating fabrics, and ITH (in-the-hoop) projects.

We will create 4 projects: napkin, applique tote bag, ITH key fob, and ITH coaster. Each project focuses on a different technique such as “normal” vs. ITH embroidery (sewing on a finished item – napkin & bag vs. ith coaster and key fob), hooping vs. floating fabrics (bag vs. key fob), and adding text to a file vs. not adding anything.

Preferred Hoop size 5”x7” (4”x 4” is allowed; some projects will be made differently).

Frequently Asked Questions

What should attendees prepare ahead of time?
*This event covers embroidery theories and techniques; it is not intended to teach you how to operate your embroidery machine. Please have a basic understanding of your machine such as how to thread, insert your bobbin, add a design and text, and how to scale/move text or a design. We will explain how to hoop correctly, use stabilizers, setting up a workspace, and many other embroidery topics. For the enjoyment of everyone attending, please update your embroidery machine with the latest software. Also, have your machine set up. This means your embroidery arm is attached, embroidery foot is securely attached (please use your screwdriver to tighten.), 75/11 needle installed, 60 wt. embroidery bobbin is wound, and hoop and project supplies are ready. Thank you.
